The mechanics in place in modern Pokemon existed because the series was developed for a glorified calculator and meant to emulate the feeling of playing Dungeons and Dragons with paper and pencil. Video games can be a lot more now, and I'm not saying it has to play like Monster Hunter. Other RPGs are so much better than Pokemon, and Pokemon just continues to eat creative dust because it's financially secure.
