Eh it’s just the paradox of franchises— you either repeat yourself to death and people get bored or you change your formula enough to alienate your original audience. Happens all the time. They don’t have any reason to appeal to one generation of fans over another as long as the series continues to make money

Instead of good new Pokémon we get nothing but Legendaries and fuckin super move gimmicks.

Instead of great puzzles and dungeons we get handholding story and small corridors.

I think he’s referring to things like full 3D environment and emphasis on story appealing to different people over the conventions of earlier games. These obviously aren’t things you value necessarily, but they are valued by those who will continue to keep the franchise in business. At least that’s my take on it
