How the hell did I get past Mount Moon with Charmander in gen I? Was I really autistic enough to ember through every single hiker at a snail's pace? Or autistic enough to grind a Caterpie up to Butterfree every single time? I don't remember being that autistic.

I would grind a Caterpie into a Butterfree just south of Pewter, and use Confusion to steamroll Brock.
It probably was the most useful one through Mt. Moon as well, but I don't remember much except for hating the layout.

Funny how people always complain about how easy is to level pokemon nowadays when 70% to 80% of the stories about how people remember RBY are shit like this with people only using their starters and never ever using another pokemon unless is something they received for free with a high enough level.

You either catch a nidoran or Mankey outside of Vermillion and have it learn double kick or low kick. Easy. Also nidoran is easily the best early game Pokémon you could have.

Then he still has no problem getting a nidoran who learns double kick at lvl12. Steam rolls through Mt. Moon at that point.

One of the first items you find in Mt. Moon is TM12 which you can use on a rattata/Raticate or nidorino/a.

I wouldn't say Nidorina/o/Raticate because you need to gring, and OP probably cared more about his Charmander. But Jigglypuff and others could learn.
I still believe he overleveled his Charmander (and probably evolve it), Geodude have a terrible Special, so 2 or 3 embers can do the job.
