For example, reborn is quite entertaining if you're looking for hard battles period, but mind you, if ypu can't put up with agenda, drama, over-the-top plot and artificial difficulty, then the game isn't for you.
Insurgence offers an interesting selection of fanmade moves, items and abilities, but only if you can sit through the massive list of retardedly broken delta forms, and the dimension-saving, "OU council" levels of autism plot.
Among hack roms, gaia offers a relatively down to earth plot, has a healthy selection of mons to use, and its only real fault is that the game has been in development waaaay more time than it has been updated, and is only 6 gyms long. Still, a promising candidate for best rom when finished.
Out of the finished ones, glaced is pretty good and consistent, at least the first half. The game then has you go through johto and there are those who say the plot gets worse, but I still think it's pretty good, considering the competence.
Life of guardians I found to be pretty good. Game has some stupid characters and 5-year-old level fakemon, in top of super cluttered plot, but you can build a decent team of canon mons play through it for a fairly entertaining experience.
