It will be either Incineroar, an Ultra Beast, or a Gen 8 Pokemon. Mimikyu wouldn't be interesting as a fighter because its gimmick doesn't translate well into a fighting game. It would be better as a pokeball pokemon.

It does matter. Unique gameplay mechanics trumps character popularity in Sakurai's mind. It's why Chrom didn't get in and why almost every SSB4 newcomer had some unique gimmick or play style to them.

TPC gave Sakurai images of Greninja in XY's development, and he worked off those.
TPC made most of the decisions, Sakurai worked on the execution.

They could just do an early 2019 release. Giving up that holiday season bump is a drag, but Pokemon will sell no matter when it's released. Make Smash Switch the Holiday 2018 behemoth and use it to promote the next generation of Pokemon as well.

I don't think there's any chance at all of a gen 7 starter. Mimikyu is an interesting idea, slightly more possible. I don't see any new Pokemon though, there's a very good chance that the amount of new fighters in this Smash is not as large as Brawl and WiiU.
