Anyone else prefer the 2D/semi 3D sprites and graphics of Platinum/Soulsilver/Black etc over the new full 3d sprites and graphics of X/Alpha sapphire/Moon etc?

Sun/Moon was a huge step forward for the overworld sprites, it's the best 3D Pokemon has looked on a handheld. However, those models (along with the Oras/XY) are still shitty.

As for 2.5D, no, that shit was awful. Gen 3 > Gen 7 > Gen 6 >> Gens 4/5

The progress they made from DPPt to BW was something else. I was hoping to see something similar happen from XY to SM but obviously that didn't happen. They should've stuck to 2D and just further improved upon BW

For me, it's a huge downgrade. The overworld felt more like a 3D platformer than an adventure RPG.

No GF were trained in 2D since the beginning. 3D is less of a technical problem than it is a mental "We have to make it look like old Pokemon but in 3D" thing. It worked for Zelda, but it just doesn't seem to work as well for Pokemon.

The 3D overworlds were pretty good in BW, but I don't miss the enlarged back sprites in single battles. They were fine in other formats though, dunmo why singles is the only one with blown up sprites.

I prefer pure 2D or pure 3D.
2D over 3D on a DS screen rarely looks good with all those twists, deformations and extreme aliasing.
It was infuriating playing through gen 4 and specially gen 5 with moments that could have looked great but instead you were presented with deformed bunches of black and grey pixels.

Not to mention the DS's own power is pretty limited so stuff like those trees look pretty horrible at places.
And gen 5's sprite style of giant heads on top of stick men is hideous.

Yes, I didn't like the gen 5 overworld as much though. Wish we could have platinum/soulsilver overworld and the current 3D battles.

This was their sprite work at its best while they're still in early stages with 3D. Hopefully they'll move away from the "we still want the 3D models to look like sprites" approach with the Switch.

Yes. I wish they had kept improving the 2.5D style overworld while still moving onto full 3D for the pokemon themselves.
I also wish the games were made by a more competent, non-lazy developer.

So many games after they introduced models, and I still think that the sprites literaly always looked better. Old sprites were comfy and served their purpose really well, Platinum was gorgeous, BW/2 were gorgeous and pokemon also look better as sprites than they do models

Something about the look of gen 5 is just so appealing to me.
I fucking adore the in-battle sprites too, even if they're just bouncing around. I just loved them.
The 3d models look so boring to me by comparison. Just dull and lifeless.

I loved the moving sprites at first too, they were quite effective. But halfways through W2 they just started to feel bland, shoddy and ugly, they're just a more pixelated version of amateur flash animations.
Something that also helped was the dinamism of battles with its crazy camera (even if it deformed sprites further), quicker pace and the way stuff like abilities were expressed.
