It's a good and positive thing, because it's the original story that was given before starting Pokémon (anime), how should be the 1st mangas and games. Satoshi and Serena have a story from their childhood when they lived together in Pallet Town, their feelings and love grew. Later, they turned 10 years old, they reunited and started a trip together with their dreams, pokémon and many things. Satoshi and Serena demonstrated their actions and feelings, they became a love couple.

Serena's lack of a special is probably a mixture of not using the same animation style in XY as in SM (You'll note that all of the previous friend cameos after Dawn's DP special were animated as episodes from their respective series) as well as a struggle to get her to do something that played up the best parts of her character. She relies heavily on Ash for her episodes (even when they're about her) so not having him would be weird. Also anything with her would have to acknowledge the kiss she gave Ash at the end of XY&Z and it's just easier to ignore it for now.
