Sun and moon or sun and ultra moon, for example
>put level 1 magikarp for trade on gts for whatever pokemon you want to trade evolve
>make sure to specify gender and level of what pokemon you're trading yourself with so it's easier to find and less likely to randomly pop up for someone else
>switch cartridge
>trade
>switch back
>bank evolved mon
>repeat as often as necessary
But I do agree trade evos are outdated. At the very least they should give each save file one item that let's them evolve a pokemon thay usually requires being traded

imagine my face when I had the Charizard, Wepinbell, Kadabra, Graveler, Haunter and Machoke team in my first playthrough ever and I've just learned that I will never be able to evolve them (because I had no friend playing or second console)

Just make them "link" evos instead of trading. So any kind of interaction will make them evolve, such as battling. There, you still have to communicate with another player but run 0 risk of losing your mon or the hassle of trading back.
