Starters are the marketing power houses of each gen and - as we were reminded during the Pokémon day countdown - are the most important choice for players. They'll be on t shirts, ds/switch themes, lunch boxes and need to be as visually distinct as possible.
I like the designs, though the tapir is pretty simple looking, but the artist hasn't thought about the purpose of the base starters within the wider franchise. Grey-white/muted green and grey-white/muted teal are awful from a marketing standpoint.
