Any ROM hack recommendations? I like gen 2 hacks the best, but there seems to be far more based on gen 3.

Pic related is Pokémon Gaia. It’s a really good fire red hack that includes new Pokémon, fairy type, and mega evolutions. Plus it has a not retarded story and well designed routes with lots of hidden secrets. I’d recommend it for sure.

This has always confused me too. There’s that slime rancher game I guess. But nobody has taken the Pokémon formula and really improved upon it. I think part of it is coming up with likable, iconic monsters, nobody can beat Pokémon in that regard.

Must play completed rom hacks master list

All these include completely new regions, I didn't include feature hacks or demakes

Dark rising series is ok but the story is way too shitty and edgy to stomach

Slime Rancher is 9/10, I really enjoy it. But it only has the vaguest of "monster catching" to it. There's no real training or battling or progression at all.

It does seem likely that designs are what's holding it back, but it can't be that hard. Indie games are getting bigger and better every day.

That's 100% true
Indie game monsters are almost always hideous with terrible art to boot and lazy evolution/progression of the monsters

Not every Pokemon design is perfect, but there are a lot of out there that have a certain charm to them that make them appealing characters
