is there a specific need for a set triangle? cause generally 1 starter is unused so couldnt it just be that the starter rival picks one that is opposite to yours but not related to a third type? and seeing as generally they only have tackle/scratch etc so no STAB moves anyway? wouldnt it be better and teach you more if you started with STAB moves and your opponent chose a pokemon that was resistant to your attack? then in that first battle you got destroyed and it would force you to build a diverse team rather than just over level your starter?

Recent Starters do start with STAB moves.

They've been trying to move away from tradition more. Last gen, Trevor and Tierno don't have starters, and Gladion doesn't even take take the last starter.

If they do decide to go away from the starter triangle, it would still have to be simple. Like giving Gladion Type:Null. A Normal Type (and a legendary but the point still stands)

Starters are meant to teach the mechanics to children. Colours to explain typing is part of this.
