Nearly everything in in Hoenn is accessable by walking without having to go through a gate/cave/other seperate map/loading zone. It is the only region like this.

This is why i hate the hoenn to alola comparison. Alola was tropical as an excuse to separate everything into 4 loading zones

Gen 3 Gameboy graphics had the best optimization. ORAS needed loading zones to prevent lag.

This desu. Every place in Johto is prettu close to each other to the point you don't even need to use any HM to reach there, like some places in Hoenn where Rock Smash is needed. The most remote areas fom Johto are Cianwood, where you don't even need to go there a second time, and Blacthorn, because Ice Cave.

There're some gates between the areas? Sure, but they're closer than any two points in Hoenn.

It's a shame GF is too incompetent to dynamically load a map and Hoenn's great interconnected overworld had to be cut up with like 800 billion loading zones in ORAS. I specifically remember being a fucking child and noticing and appreciating how there were no loading zones whatsoever in Hoenn and how you could go literally anywhere from anywhere.

It's not like they kept it up anyway considering Sinnoh and Unova were loaded with gate buildings, but comparing RSE to ORAS in that way makes the latter look bad.

That's probably because the region is small as fuck unless you go spelunking (which imo is the strongest part of Johto along with Lake of Rage exploration).

That's because there was a perfect balance of graphics and console power.
You can bitch and moan all you want but this is one of the few times where this isn't GF's fault.

Though BotW showed you can have an open world with almost no loading times on the Switch.

Actually if you want to bitch, Rustboro city and the routes around it are the only area (besides the elite4, but that is a clear challenge rather than necessity) that is locked behind screen transitions (vedanturf tunnel, the petabug woods and meteor falls). Every other area can be walked towards. It's pretty neat.

You'd have to go through meteor falls or Verdanturf Tunnel anyway. But still, the OP did say it was mostly interconnected and it pretty much still is. I'd really like more regions with interconnected areas like that either via walking or caves/tunnels, it makes exploring a lot of fun.

If you fly to Lavaridge, you would be able to reach every other area of the map without transitions. It has ledges, but it's technically not behind a loading screen and open to the rest of the region.

That practically counts as a dungeon like the Petalburg Woods, considering is entirely disconnected on its own, and more importantly: it doesn't appear on the overworld mapping.

Petalburg Woods, Meteor Falls, Verdanturf tunnel and the whole volcano area are proper gameplay areas and don't really function as a hidden loading zone the way gate buildings do, so Rustboro and Lavaridge (to an extent) are really just isolated from the rest of the map by dungeons, not hardware limitations or pointless buildings.

Same for the pokemon league. And Sootopolis is just kind of it's own thing.
