I think in sm it was around a half hour for the first battle and you the entire first island was a tutorial that takes at least an hour in sm and usum

Why do companies still think this absurd hand holding is okay? BotW took out the handholding and it was the most acclaimed zelda since OoT. Dark Souls proved that there are still tons of people that want to learn the game themselves. "but pokemon is a kids game" yet the first pokemon managed to be a cultural phenomenon without the hand holding. Even Pokemon Go left some weird mechanics for players to figure out themselves.

Usum got you to your first battle faster but there was overall more dialogue. In gen 7 you never really feel like your journey "started" because the entire game plays like a tutorial and a lot of people ended up with the same team by the end

Old man tutorial is skippable in gen 1 for sure. Watching that was mandatory for Missingno glitch. I don't recall a mandatory gen 2 catch tutorial, but that one's been a while

Shauna was the worst of the bunch, though. During one part of the game, she's like a mini Lillie. Get rid of all the friends, add a good rival, and tweak Team Flare. That would help a lot.
