Yeah it really threw me off. This is the same game that put out Primarina after all. Maybe they wanted to take it one step at a time and pulled back. They'd base the human decision next time on reactions to all these female-embodying Pokemon we got this gen.

Braixen especially, since I think a lot of people saw Delphox return more toward the gender-neutral line. But yeah gradualism is all I can think of for why they bailed last minute. To be frank, they should've just went ahead with it anyway. I remember seeing a lot of posts when Ilima was first revealed saying he could've just as easily been the 'dreamy boy' or 'rich pampered kid' archetype, especially in the latter case because he was wealthy.
