Characters. Attach-ability. I believe it's the same reason MOBA games are so popular, why spectator sports are.

You identify with people. Maybe the Football player is a ginger like you and that makes him like you. Maybe you see Garbodor and you think you are treated like trash in real life.

Maybe you see Lina and you want to be the Fiery Female. Or maybe it's Pharah who is a protector of the good.

Pokemon is casually easy, but has a heap of depth to it. I mean obviously you could write 100 page essay on this but TLDR: Attachability, Easy to Learn hard to master.

I genuinely believe that if they made a 3D game that was streamable on Twitch like an MMO of some sort it would be the best game ever made.

The underaged Pokemonfags spammed /v/ too much. Especially during the pre-release time period of a game. Unlike most people, they didn't make a thread or two and remained contained. They spammed the whole board with a billion fucking threads.

This board isn't the result of popularity. It's the result of everyone wanting to keep the kids contained in their own little corner of cancer.

/a/ didn't want pokeani plebs and told them to go to /v/. Same with /tcg/ and to a smaller degree, /toy/. Then when you took non-vidya discussion to /v/ they would REEEEEEEEE and shitpost you out of the board. There were enough people complaining to moot about the appropriate boards not accepting various aspects of the franchise that caused him to stall the whining by making a containment board.

Now there's a name I ain't heard in a long while... The only reason /tcg/ threads existed is because MtG and Pokemon had to coexist. Once the trading card game was exiled to /vp/, the facade of "All trading card games welcomed!" was dropped, and only "Magic The Gathering General" was left.
