You know, I'm actually think this movie was a brilliant idea: not everybody is familiar with the games, but everybody knows Pikachu, and this movie is about Pikachu doing a funny cute thing (being a detective). So, even non fans will be interested in this movie because they won't need to play the games to get it.
I'm kind of exited to see if I'm right.

There hasn’t really been any implication that the relationship between people and Pokemon will be any different than in the games

Still hard to believe that the first ever live action Pokemon movie ISN'T about the main concept, instead focusing on a spinoff game.
If they had to do a spinoff, the Mystery Dungeon series would've been better material. Could've had a fun as hell adventure movie with a decent story.

Does that really apply to Pokemon though? Considering its history as an anime franchise in addition to the games, I’d say they’ve proven that the franchise is adaptable to the big screen. It really just requires good writing and direction, and this movie has a capable team in that regard.

The problems with both of those movies were rooted in casting, writing, and direction. The people in charge of those aspects of Detective Pikachu have far better reputations than their respective counterparts in the films you mentioned.
