Yeah. But it's true that there are few mons after gen 1 that are just monsters with no specific inspiration. Many of the animal-inspired ones you can recognize right down to the species of their rl counterpart.

I think that's really cool actually, seeing monsters based off of a lot of niche animals. I know Genwunners and whatever complain about that a lot, but I'd rather stylized representations of specific animals as opposed to generic animals crossed with reptile/kaiju things. I got into Pokémon because they weren't afraid to make animals like starfish and clams cool as hell, and I'm glad they've only gotten better with that.

I feel like it's more interesting taking something like a sea cucumber and using its organ-ejection as a concept to base a monster off of, than combining a kangaroo, a rabbit, etc. with a dinosaur. And it makes sense that GF has stepped away from it- Gen I was loaded with those sorts of designs.

Comes down to personal taste I guess. For me taking inspiration from exotic places is one thing, fantastic when it enhances the artist's creativity, but not so much when it turns into an exercise of browsing wikipedia for 30 minutes and more or less making a carbon copy of what you find there with some added magical powers or some cultural reference. It's fine in moderation, but Gen 1's clusterfuck of designs had better overall variety.
