The problem is more that Smogon seems to encourage its users to be elitist assholes. For instance, the ELO ladder. Once you make it above the majority of the riff-raff so that only a few dozen other people are on your level, it's actually good for you to play less games so you don't accidentally lose to someone much lower than you because that's all you have to play against. It seriously encourages "No, I won't play with you, you're not good enough". Like they forgot somewhere long the line it's a game and it's supposed to be fun, rather than just another way to prove you're better than everyone else.
I guess I just dislike the spirit of being competitive at all.
