1, Japan in general places less emphasis on purely cosmetic treatments, especially compared to America. It's a little different if you are a woman whose career IS your appearance, but otherwise, if it ain't broke, don't waste energy fixing it, unless the dentist is about to go out of business and you feel bad for him.
2, Game development is a high stress, high continual work-hour job, especially if you have that good ol' suicidal nip work ethic. Compared to many professions, it is quite a bit more likely that you are going to be at work for long enough that you miss a few brushings, and then smoke and shit.
3, In japan, the tea flows like water. It may well be that drinking six or eight cups of green tea a day might be the reason japs live so long when they don't off themselves, but it also takes a toll on the teeth. Especially if mr. game dev doesn't brush for a few days and lets those enzymes just chill on his teeth for a week.
