As for gen 5 I don't think you've actually played it on top of having a story that revolved around the characters themselves rather than the legends it wasn't a carbon copy of gen 3's plot like 4 was.
The music was far better and didn't have that tinny synth sound that Gen 4 unfortunately abused.
The region was designed in a way that it would sate people who liked to explore while at the same time being easier to follow around instead of the crisscrossing backtracking nonsense of 4 which was the cause of the linearity in later games.
The post game was far better too with what was essentially the entire gen 4 frontier contained in the PWT. And that wasn't even half of what it offered not to mention it was the first game to give you tangible rewards for completing the dex.
As for the pokemon, well, let's just say it wasn't the generation that added evolutions that are reviled to the point where they're still backpedaling today.
