Real-time battles are also out of question. It would wreck the entire battle system, the crux of this franchise. The best you can do is to refine it to perfection using lessons learned from modern games such as Persona 5 and previous Pokemon games.
Pokemon would work well with expansion packs but those are pointless because we get enhanced versions anyway.
Sidequests are a very good idea, they can be used as a leveling mechanic instead of the usual grind.
A large amount of content is an absolute requirement, in my opinion. At least give us an 80-hour-long storyline, it's not that difficult.
