>>35164966>gen 1Fun games. Glitches are neat to exploit and the dated visuals/mechanics makes you feel like you’re stepping into another world. Gameplay is pretty free form, so you can do whatever you like without being shoehorned anywhere too badly. Still has decent replayability.
>gen 2Direct upgrade to gen 1. It being a sequel-like gen to gen 1 makes it more interesting and it still has an old-school sort of vibe. Still has decent replayability as well, though being so open with gyms 5-7 can kill the game if you’re not using 4+ mons since everything will be low level.
>gen 3Visuals were upgraded and an entirely new region disassociated with the previous two made it feel fresh to me, though the gameplay is still the same. First time the box legend is story enforced, though with how much crap there is in the overworld makes it seem less like you’re railroaded which is nice. Gameplay is fast as fuck, everything feels snappy and double battles are a nice change of pace.
>gen 4Slowdown from gen 3. Story is gen 3 2.0, and the physical/special split fucked competitive even if it made some mons more viable. HM usage is off the charts (to be fair gen 3 did this too but to a lesser extent). Would probably be better to replay if the gameplay speed wasn’t such a downgrade from gen 3. This feels like an awkward gen, especially with GSC remakes shoehorning the legend into the plot in a really mediocre way.
>gen 5Don’t have much to say to this. Linearity is a result of DPPt’s map being a clusterfuck to kiddies, but the snappiness is back. A more narrative-focused plot is good and bad, with more frequent interruptions given in an attempt to make an interesting story.
Gen 6 and 7 are mediocre.
