Gen 6 isn't as linear, and you can actually go 10 steps without activating 20 cut scenes and 10 text cutsences. Gen 7 literally took a step back on EVERY feature introduced in XY. There's very little Sun and Moon actually did better.
XY are mediocre, butatleast they aren't a glorified visual novel.

I still remember the days of generals on /v/. They were the most civil, friendly threads on the board then. but that was the DS era, where gamefreak tried to toss their older fans a bone. Now? Shit single player designed for braindead children and a "postgame" that involves battling the same overpowered megas and Tapus online. Of course it's toxic! People are understandably salty and take it out on their fellow fan.

USUM turned /vp/ into grump central. There's nothing to do but to argue with strangers online.

Same. I kept waiting for shit the get better. I never finished XY. legit boring. ORAS somehow came out worse than Emerald (though dat dexnav). and the Sun/Moon? Jesus Christ. What the fuck happened. Who okayed the festival plaza?

Basically, I was waiting for Gamefreak to hit their stride and they never did. Every game was mostly WORSE. and they have to deal with legit console hardware? I'm finding it hard to be excited.

Pokémon deserves better than a mediocre jRPG.

The problem ISN'T with the Festival Plaza. It's with how it was implemented.
If it wasn't a PSS replacement, it would have. If the Festival Plaza was its own thing along with the PSS, it would have been fine.

Like the focus on cutscenes, linear single player progression, forced tutorials, and general handholding that makes the game feel less like an RPG adventure and more like a (chore) visual novel. Not to mention multiplayer (un)balance. Totally hardware and not game design.

A lot of the problems are bad design but they were limited in scope by having to develop for 3ds. The hand holding and cutscenes wouldn't be tolerated with the established trend of switch games

Stall isn't played much, balance and bulky offense though are, and toxapex is good in those

Gen 7 did all of gen 6's features worse, more hand holding, more cut scenes, and more linear region

Only thing it really does better is a better region and better Pokemon, but the better region is negated by the fact that you aren't allowed to explore it

You're allowed to explore plenty, and I enjoyed the little areas I've discovered in ultra moon
It feels an awful lot like people only engage in the alola games on the surface level and refuse to go back and explore and do things like side quests and getting all the TMs

Not who you're responding to, and I kind of get where you're coming from, but all those sidequests are basically just a matter of talking to the right people and maybe a battle or two. You aren't exploring anything, the little extras are being handed to you on a silver platter (as long as you're in the right place at the right time of day, which is almost as stupid as the Regigigas ORAS quest to get every event without looking it up).

There are no areas to explore beyond a few tiny spots, and most of those don't require backtracking.

It's a bit light on exploration compared to juicy regions like hoenn and sinnoh, but it's pretty standard when matched up the the series as a whole

Most of those are required for completion (flying z-crystal and Necrozma in the first cave, for example), I thought you were talking about actual side areas. And those just amount to using a ride Pokemon and riding down a straight path, no better than the Ultra Space rooms. That's nothing even compared to past games in the series.

I dunno, the only dfference between these and past games in the series is that these are 3d environments, and not little tiled rooms with a simple maze

Some regions are fantastic with their bonus zones and exploration, though, and much better than alola
