With enough of these Spicy Opinion lists, it would be interesting to tally each starters' positions with a +1, 0 or -1 score to determine which starters are more heavily favored in /vp/. It'd only be useful with a bigger amount of lists to extrapolate data from, so i'm bumping this thread in hope for more results.

Now, let's evaluate how much I like/dislike the ones which are the lowest per gen...

I'm indifferent towards Blastoise. I'll enjoy him when I do, but I can also root against one.

Meganium is crap. That's it.

I like Swampert, just not as much as the other ones.

Torterra is shit.

Emboar is... okay, I didn't really like him at first but seeing other people hate him so much made me feel bad for the poor hog.

Delphox is... lame for me. Not as shit as Meganium and Torterra, but I'm indiferent to it in a level that's lower than Blastoise.

I like Incineroar, just that I really like Decidueye's design and used him in Sun, and I used Primarina in Ultra Sun. Incineroar's pretty cool and I definetely want an Intimidate one, but tfw no PokéBank D':

So i finally compiled a list based on /vp/'s opinions on the starter final forms displayed on this thread. My basis was:

Every time a certain Pokemon lands the 1st place in their gen, they score 1 point. Landing in 2nd nets 0 points, while landing last earns -1 points.

On this basis, the list goes:

Blastoise = -3
Charizard = 2
Venusaur = 7
Typhlosion = 5
Feraligatr = 15
Meganium = -21
Blaziken = -6
Sceptile = 5
Swampert = 4
Infernape = 4
Empoleon = -7
Torterra = 7
Samurott = 0
Serperior = 11
Emboar = -13
Delphox = -8
Chesnaught = -7
Greninja = 17
Decidueye = 6
Primarina = -1
Incineroar = -4

By this we can tally that the starters with the most positive reception on /vp/ are: Greninja, Feraligatr and Serperior.

One way to tally the weight of appeal of a gens final Starters is to sum the total points of each pokemon of the gen. If we were to do that the points per generation would be as follows:

Gen I : 6 Points
Gen II : -1 Points
Gen III : 3 Points
Gen IV : 4 Points
Gen V: -2 Points
Gen VI: 2 Points
Gen VII: 1 Point

Positive numbers indicate a Set of starters that leaves an overall good impression, while negative numbers indicate general disdain. Ergo the importance order of the starters would be:

I>IV>III>VI>VII>II>V

I'm willing to update this list if more people collaborate in this thread. For now i'm going to shoot a wedding video. If this thread is still up at midnight when i return, i'll update the results.

Well, judging by weighted Gen averages as seen in >>35186478, technically the overall starter ranking by gen is pretty damn normie. That's the kind of list i'd expect from your average pokemon fan.

If you're referring to individual scores, only Venusaur, Empoleon and maybe Blaziken strike me as "contrarian". The rest have scores similar to their respective public perception.

I don’t know, you don’t see Charizard 2nd that often, Typhlosion is definitely the normie pick of the 3, gen 3 is the only one where all 3 could realistically get 1st but it still feels odd with how low Blaziken’s score is, Torterra is a darling here but it’s one of the least popular overall, gen 5 looks right though Samurott usually gives Serperior stronger competition, gen 6 is normie, 7 is also kinda normie but I expected the scores to be closer.

Well, it IS the most popular of it's gen. Gen IV's score differences between the starters aren't that great because they're all pretty appreciated overall.

These updates haven't been kind to Blaziken, who now has a lower score than Delphox and is tied with Chesnaught. Incineroar has also taken a huge hit. Meanwhile, Swampert has gained some huge momentum and is now among the most beloved starters in the list.

As for gen scores they are:

Gen I: 5 Points
Gen II: -2 Points
Gen III: 3 Points
Gen IV: 3 Points
Gen V: -2 Points
Gen VI: 2 Points
Gen VII: 0 Points

As we can see here, all Gens suffered point losses since the first update, with Gens III, V and VI remaining constant, but with no increases to be seen.

Breaking down gen distributions, Gen I was the most balanced in terms of starter love, with no differences larger than 5 points, but this honor has since passed to Gen IV, with its biggest differential being 8 points now, while Gen I's is now 12 points.

Gen II starts strong and tries to earn positive score, but common dislike for Meganium ends up dragging the trio into the negatives. Meanwhile the opposite happens in Gen VI's case, where Chesnaught and Delphox see some flak, but Greninja's unanimous approval is stronger that the disdain for the others, strong enought to earn the gen a positive score despite this.

The Gen ratings are now:

I>IV=III>VI>VII>II=V

This list is actually very similar to mine. I'm impressed. Let's see how this keeps up
