Before learning types, or stat spreads or meta picks or anything the most important skill is learning how to make predictions. Players either react based on what you've got in play, or what they expect you'll do, and most of the time they'll stick with whatever strategy is working until they're punished for it twice. Scout them out, get a read, proceed to win accordingly.
Like if they lead with a stealth rock user, and you with something taunt they have three options: Try for Stealth Rock, use an attack, or switch to something else.
If they use the Stealth Rock then they're either really dumb or they're trying to next level you. Either way you know you'll know the way to edge them out in the future is by playing safe and standard. If they either switch or go for an attacking move expecting you'd use Taunt then that shows they're thinking about what's right in front of them which means that gutsier plays are more likely to be clean victories.
