How to improve the battle system to make it more skill based while keeping the typical pokemon feel to it?

Things that need to go for sure:
- a lot of the RNG
- 4D prediction mindgame shit

Is this system doomed to be an eternaly RNG fest?

If there wasn't skill involved, there wouldn't be the same players constantly at the top. This "Pokemon takes no skill" meme is starting to get annoying when it objectively does. That doesn't mean RNG never wins games, it does, but it's not the end of the world and keeps you on your feet.

Still predictions will always be bound to chance and I know it can not be removed from the game, you can try to predict things in any game. But should it really be such a fundamental part of the gameplay? Where games often come down to pretty much a few random decisions with minor predicable differences.

Why do they force us to watch 30 second cutscenes every time someone uses a Z-move? We didn't have this problem in gen 5 with Gems. Honestly I wish they never made Z-moves and just brought back Gems as they were.

I am simply interested in some ideas how the current system could be changed that I would enjoy more. For me this would mainly be less RNG but I would like to hear other people opinions.

Will this ever be implemented? No. Will some of these random elements ever be removed from the battle system? No. Can we still explore this idea a bit? I would say yes, but at the moment we seem to be stuck with degenerates like >>35178709 who cant wrap their mind around the fact that probabilistic do not apply consistently on small samples.

How exactly does this compare to the game where you can get stopped from doing anything in a turn for pretty much no reason? Just get bad luck on two moves and you are one Pokemon down for nothing. But I guess I just need to use that 40 str version of a move because it has 100% chance to hit, while the 100 str only has a 90% one. And you know what that means, gotta get that luck managment going.

I always thought it'd be cool if, when you picked a move, you had to do some quick minigame (maybe like pic related) on the bottom screen. It would be harder for more powerful moves and your performance would add a modifier to the power of the move.
If you get a perfect score, you crit, if you fail, it misses.
Or something like that.
I guess it's irrelevant now since there's no second screen on the switch.

Op here, sorry but that is exactly what I do not want. The gameplay should stay comparable to what it is now. Turn based, select a move and done type of thing. As previously mentioned I wouldn't like some action type of game but simply some options to minimize the rng. I don't even care too much about the prediction shit. I would prefer if it could be handled some other way but if not it isn't too big of a problem. I just think it is quite dishonest to claim that this is a good system, when often decisions come down to 50/50 and now you are supposed to make a right play.

Anyways, is it possible to keep the system that close but still take out the rng? I don't know.

What you're asking for would bring pokemon battles even closer to simple rock/paper/scissors than it already is. Ironically, this would make predictions and lucky guesses even more important.
I don't want to say git gud because I have no room to talk, but unless you substantially change the game to require different skills, nothing will change about how the game is played. You're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

exactly. the problem isnt the RNG its the balancing of moves not being consistent with the RNG.

I'll never understand /vp/. THE GAME HAS AN AWFUL MECHANIC THAT IS BASED AROUND ITS ENTIRE GAMEPLAY SYSTEM, I CAN'T STAND IT. Pokemon is still my favorite game though and I can't wait for the next game to come out.

It's retarded. Losing because I'm in a mirror match against an Azumarill and I miss my Play Rough while the opponent hits his isn't fun at all.

Also yes, prediction and probability management is a skill, but only to a point. Aegislash isn't balanced just because "hurr prediction is a skill." It's unbalanced because it's just a retarded 50/50 prediction that you literally have no way of really telling because you're battling against another human instead of a robot.

Make it quicker by assigning everything to a certain button so that you don't have to bother with menus for longer than a second on every turn.
Make the animations snappier.
Make everything look more interesting with more camera angles and animations: for example when the player chooses an item, focus the character actually slowly digging through their bag and pondering, and then picking something. This also needs a fuckton of detailed facial animations. And give more focus to the trainers in general, make them more emotional and proactive throughout the battle.
Give everything more rhythm. It sounds silly, but it's actually a great way to make things feel very authentic. Simply let the idle animations repeat in sync with music, and time the menu animations properly. If you ever wondered why Persona 5 battles felt so fucking good - that's the reason why.
Make the backgrounds more detailed.
Make the battle flow more naturally - less interruptions and more actions.
That's it. Mechanics themselves are totally fine, what needs updating is their presentation.

Instead of leaving crits more or less completely to the RNG gods, replace it with a more skill-based system based on timing or something (but still with some straight up RNG to it so it's not completely exploitable). I'm not sure how they would do it though. Maybe a sort of timing minigame, but that would probably irritate people to have to do it over and over.

But yeah, "making your own luck".

Prediction is absolutely a skill, so ignoring that one.

You literally can't do high risk high reward moves without just slapping in RNG because in a turn based system you literally can't do anything else. They don't care. Combat is not the selling point here, content is. They should focus on new mons, new features, new locations, music and better visuals. And only after that they can work on old combat mechanics (spoiler alert: they won't).

Too easily abusable. There's a reason crits are random.
Personally, I like the idea of moves having 0% chance to crit by default, but some moves, abilties, etc. can change that.
