Oldfag who has only ever played gens 1 and 2 here. Which one of the subsequent gens would you say is best for a guy like me?

3 and 4 is tolerable. Honestly stick to romhacks like pokemon prism or remakes of gen 1-2

Pokemon black essentially remade gen 1 with it's roaster but it did a terrible job.

SS and HG if you really liked 2. That's the last game I really liked in the series (have played all). If you want something fresh I would try try 6, it's fun in a familiar way to 1 and 2 with great graphics.

Play USUM. They're way better than people say they are. Ultra Sun was the first game I played since Fire Red since it's released. People who play gen after gen expect way to much & are most likely bored with the seires.

No. Don't play these unless you like games riddled with cut scenes to the point where the game is basically just playing itself. And if you like extremely linear maps.
I don't know why this guy is trying to accept low quality games, but he's the problem with the series right now. It has all those problems I listed, and literally took a step back on all the features XY introduced.

If you had to pick one and only one generation, pick gen 5 (BW, B2W2). Otherwise, play gens 3-5 in order, but only the following games: Emerald, Platinum, HGSS, BW, B2W2.

If you want to keep up with releases, don't bother with gen 6 or 7. Wait for gen 8.

and of course the Frontier on its own is honestly enough to return to Emerald over ORAS

In all fairness, I didn't hate ORAS, I had enough fun with it, and the physical/special split is always a good thing, though I'd still definitely rather play Emerald over it.
