About the starters, yes. But Solgaleo is clearly a reference to the alchemical lion, the Pokedex entry literally describes it as "the beast that devours the sun".

Solrock even learns fire spin because it spins and emits heat, referencing that the sun isn't actually made of fire but emits heat, which is USUALLY fire type in moves.

I don't really think you can blame/accuse Gen 3 of that. Leviathan/Behemoth/Ziz aren't exactly abstract concepts like Time/Space/Matter or such. Gen 3 did have Solrock and Lunatone which while they are just "the Sun/Moon but a rock" are designed to seem alien rather than literal and their moves represent them well.

I don't just like Gen 3 and hate Gen 4 for reference, I just think Dialga/Palkia are fucking retarded designs compared to any other legendary.

I know this is a joke/bait but I've seen this asked.
They aren't BASED on letters. It's just very loosely part of their design. Yveltal only has a Y pattern as it's not usually flying with it's tails and wings out in a Y and Xerneas only forms an X in certain stances, and even then it's just a loose similarity.

I understand the Leviathan/Behemoth/Ziz thing but that doesn't mean Groudon has be a fucking ground monster that has the inherent ability to create more ground with its very presence. Same goes for Kyogre. Those are just deities of ground and ocean at that point. Back in Gen 2 there was way more mysticism involved, Ho-oh and Lugia were IMPLIED to be powerful beings but otherwise they were just creatures like any other Pokemon, whatever supernatural power they had came from myths about them. Ho-oh doesn't have a stupid move where it brings Pokemon back to life and Lugia doesn't summon a storm every time it gets thrown out. And Gen 4 is retarded for what this anon >>35200884 said.

To be fair Gen 5 isn't too much better in this regard, the Tao trio is too abstract. Trying to adapt concepts like yin and yang into Pokemon is just silly. But Gen 6 and 7 were wonderful in terms of Legendaries, they felt like actual creatures instead of godly beings.

Lunala is weak to dark because when the moon is dark (IE a new moon), it doesn't shine as bright. That's the reasoning I've been using.

I agree. Xerneas and Yveltal were good because they weren't literally life and death; just creatures that could wield powers revolving around them. They're revered and feared, but they aren't above human affairs, and directly lended their powers to the war effort because they could. Solgaleo and Lunala took this a step further, with their myths an symbolism being just that- myths, rooted in their real lore revolving around Cosmog.

I always took Groudon and Kyogre to be harbingers rather than explicitly deities. If drizzle/rain dance are moves then Kyogre is completely justified. Groudon should always have been Ground/Fire, to imply (As Team MAGMA did) that it's simply spewing lava into the oceans to make more landmass, but because that's not explicitly the case I suppose you're completely right. Rayquaza is a bit more valid in the sense that it's some titanic creature that lives in the sky rather than utterly embodies it. Maybe the slightly weakness in Hoenn's trio comes from Rayquaza being integral to the story even in Ruby and Sapphire which isn't usually the case of the third legend. I completely agree on DPP though. We're just shown a random bizarre creature and told it's basically a god. It would have been far more interesting if they'd been worshipped and deified and were in fact just powerful Pokémon personally, but I hate Cyrus's stupid reboot the universe time travel shit so maybe I just dislike Gen 4. As for 5 again you're personally spot on. Decent designs, great concept but beyond them literally being white and black that's about as far as it goes. I like Kyruem being Ice/Emptyness but as you say it's a little abstract. Gen 6 has fantastic legendaries where you could completely believe the Death/Life motiff is factually true or just semi-true myth wrapped around an awesome creature and while I don't like their designs as much, Lunala and Solgaleo are perfect in terms of "Oh a culture worships these as gods even though they're totally not" in the way Gen 4 really wasn't.

Xerneas and Yveltal are cool because of their specific relation to the ecosystem. They don't just represent life and death in general, it's how these things tie into every day life in nature. Even though Yveltal is depicted as the more "evil" of the two they still form a balance. An ecosystem overly-abundant with life would be just as bad as an ecosystem devoid of life. It's a shame this particular aspect is pushed aside in favor of "MUH SUPERWEAPON".

Yeah, even in the anime Sycamore states that the XYZ trio are nature spirits created out of the ecosystem's desire to maintain itself. They're a lot like the Tapu, only on a stronger level, and it makes sense why Yveltal would rebel against Lysandre in Y; even a predator doesn't want to see all its prey wiped out.

I think that's really interesting. Xerneas is a plant + a deer, essentially what gives energy to everything else on the food chain. Yveltal is an eagle; an apex predator that consumes all of this energy. And Zygarde is a collection of micro-organisms... essentially what keeps everything functioning and decaying properly, from behind the scenes.
