They can't make it more obvious that not everyone is a rival than HG/SS and X/Y.
HG/SS went out of it's way to introduce the other PC as your friend (since it was Ru/Sa that started the friend/rival trend) and X/Y had an assload of friends with Calem or Serena being your only actual rival.
