The point is, how many more generations of power creep are needed to deal with that? How is it possible that we're at the point where Gengar is UU and Garchomp is slowly falling off of OU and yet Staraptor, unchanged for years, is in a very changed meta yet still in the same exact spot?

Listen, the meta changes a lot and there's no way to predict sometimes how some pokemon will change. Dragonite was in UU in gen 1 because 90% accurate Blizzard was ubiquitous.

Aggron is of course assuming it's mega'd first. Switching into a CC before mega evolving is lol. Doublade's legit though, and can scare it off with a near guaranteed OHKO from Gyro Ball after rocks or threatening it or a switch with Will-o-Wisp.

Aside from these though, not a whole lot. The moral of the story is that we need more defensive ghosts that resist flying.

It was Earthquake and Intimidate central.

Dragon Dance Gyarados was by far the biggest threat, next to Salamence. Latis were natural counters.

Rogue Metagross and Claydol threatening to Explode.

Dusclops was probably the best defensive pokemon thanks to Ice Beam, Will o Wisp and Imprison.

Some people ran Clefable with Bellyzard or just an average Dragon Dancer, while others ran weather teams.

But in general, it was a more "free game". You didn't have to meticulously counter every single combination like after gen 4 as combinations were really simple and not game ending, all setup pokemon relied on Earthquake (which means it was easy to block) or boosted single target moves such as Hydro Pump in the rain.

I really miss old doubles, hell it even had less luck too thanks to no Rock Slide.

Power creep is for the most part a /vp/ meme with not that much basis in reality. Not a single Staraptor switch-in has dropped to UU since Gen 4, and in total they have only 4 switch-ins: Doublade, Mega Aggron, Mega Steelix and Mega Slowbro, all of which are easy to exploit.
