Spin-offs should reward players with special pokemon for main series games.
By special pokemon I mean pokemon with special abilities or moves.

Not really. No one particularly cared that Manaphy was originally only available in Ranger although the problem there was that once you send it over you can't do it again.
In fact they didn't say anything bad about any of the ranger games that did that.

I am not sure what would be a good middle ground. If the special ability, or moves suck, then what's the point? If it is game changing, like AZ Floette, then it just becomes pay to win.

Surely the Mons given by the spin-off won't be usable in VGC. I don't know, I am quite conflicted by this idea.

I think if it's just a specific Pokemon (like Manaphy), then that shouldn't be the only way to get it.
If it's a Pokemon you can get normally, but with a special move or abilty, then it should be breedable and tradable.

If it was something like that, I think it would be pretty cool.

Middle ground could be not locking mons off to spinoffs, but giving mons obtained from the spinoffs access to moves they wouldn't normally learn in the mainline games. Colosseum did that and I thought it was really clever.
