I live in New York state but haven't been to NYC since 2012, and before that, probably since before the twin towers fell. Unova didn't do a whole lot for me.

Unova is probably the loosest interpretation of a real life place in the franchise. If not for Braviary and the constant hammering in of the melting pot by NPCs, I would have thought it was based on somewhere else entirely.

Born and raised in NYC here
It doesn't change my thoughts that much, it's cool to see little references like the Royal Unova being based on the Circle Line Cruise that I went on in an elementary school field trip, but it's not like Alola where the region is actually geographically accurate to real life.

Alola was eh. They got a lot of things correct, but didn't really feel like "paradise"...just a few islands with natives on it. Didn't feel good to me, but I'm definitely happy it got representation in general.

With regard to Kalos, it's cute that they tried at all. Not many games where you can visit my home region. And I like how landmarks where "fantasified", though it's still very obviously a tourist's view of France.

Would have been better without the fucking desert in the middle of everything, though. And France without its southern half is hardly France.

Unova is way too nice and polite to be based on anywhere in the Northeast United States, especially NYC
A lot of the outfitting and language was still relatively Northeast, but I couldn't definitily tell they took a lot of liberties to make the region more expansive than suburbs

New Yorker here. I absolutely loved Unova. Not all of it was geographically accurate, but it got enough right to show me that they really did visit here and get a feel for each individual neighborhood they based a place on. Nacrene City was what really did it for me. I’m from near the part of Brooklyn it’s based off, and they got the details right - the train tracks, the old warehouses... they put a lot of effort into getting the feel of it right, and I think they did it.

Yeah, more or less. Virbank is a nice representation of the NYC-adjacent urban/industrial area, and Aspertia works well as the suburban Central Jersey region, with more rural areas in between.

Nah, most of Jersey is pretty nice. There are some terrible industrial areas just outside of NYC and Philly, but other than that it’s a pretty decent place.

And yeah, native New Yorkers like making fun of it, until half of us end up moving there once we have families.

Boring, yeah, but that’s not a bad thing. Solid standard of living, and very close to a ton of exciting places, even if they’re not in the state itself. That’s why so many New Yorkers who spend the first 30 years of their lives making fun of it end up moving there once they’re married with kids. There something to be said for stability and comfort.

The Japan games were the same. And honestly I wish it would go back to being that way. I'm not liking the touristy regions.

Alola is especially bad about that. The whole thing feels like a fucking guided tour. You can pretty much trace back the exact tour that the game freak team went on on their trip to hawaii.
