Actually having to explore through different landscapes to find new pokemon that are walking,flying,swimming in real time. Do some gimmick that you have to take the pokemon's picture to add it into your dex or some shit. Battles can still be turn based, I couldn't imagine them getting rid of that ever. Maybe the open map has more reasons to explore like unmapped ruins, finding items like evolution stones and rarer pokemon the further you stay from the main trail. Pokemon was made because the creator loved exploring the area around his childhood home, catching beetles and shit. A proper addition of an open map would only support the origin of the concept even more.
But Gamefreak will never put that much work into a pokemon game.
