>>35219348Bowser Jr's latest appearance outside of spinoff before SSB4 was in New Super Mario Bros U, as a boss character. The game came out in 2012 while Smash came out in 2014. Rosalina appeared in Super Mario 3D World (2013) and Mario Kart 8 (2014). Mario is also a series with less than a dozen of core recurring characters, Pokémon has more than 800 "characters".
Duck Hunt Duo is the token retro character(from one of the most successful NES titles, even), Wii Fit Trainer and Wii Fit U Trainer are literally the same character.
Brawl added 4 Pokémon characters, but in the process they cut 2 veteran characters, and 3 of these new characters are Gen 1, tied in the same character slot and belonging to possibly the most iconic evolutionary lines in the series after Pikachu's. The other new character was the designated shillmon from the latest generation at the time.
The series in Smash Bros more similar to Pokemon is Fire Emblem, in the sense that it also introduces dozens of new characters in each new installment instead of being based around a few core recurring characters like pretty much every other series in SSB(Mario, Zelda, DK, Star Fox, Metroid, Kid Icarus...). Most if not all of these characters introduced in each game then fade into near irrelevance as the new game in the series comes out. So, unless a new character from the Fire Emblem game before the latest one is announced for Smash Bros, I wouldn't count on a gen 7 Pokemon character, or for that matter any past generation. No, gen 7 is not the current generation because gen 8 will be most likely announced at the E3(or in a Pokemon direct before) and at worst will be out a few months after Smash.
