from what I see of most opinions about what pokemon is and what it should be, there are two main lines of thought:

so, what do you think that should be prioritized for the switch game?

I've always been immersion and mechanics, as long as the mechanics are overly dumb and are simple. Games with little purpose, or story appeal(just any type of story to feel like you are accomplishing something) don't do much for me.

As a whole? Yeah. While there's a humongous amount of inexcusable decisions, the most basic sensibilities of enjoyment for me are still there. The biggest example would probably be Z-Moves. While they were a detriment to the competitive scene due to being poorly handled and making good 'mons better as opposed to their intended result of making a larger variety of viable Pokemon, it doesn't stop me from using the unviable ones - I mostly play casually with friends or randoms so the extra option in team building they provide and the uncertainty they bring when used unpredictably are a great joy. I think they're also a lot of fun to use during the maingame, provided I'm sticking to silly strategies with status Z-Moves as opposed to attacking ones. EXP Share is another great change for modern games to me; I really like being able to handle a huge variety of Pokemon keeping them all up to scratch as opposed to the engagement with a specific party of 6. There's also Amie/Refresh, which really brings out a lot of appreciation for some Pokemon otherwise unseen and can be a relaxing timesink if you experiment with every new capture.
Because of all this, I really don't tend to notice the low immersion nature of the modern games as there's a lot for me explore mechanically going through them, albeit at the cost of little to explore in worldbuilding.

totally respect that dude, i can get why all that would be entertaining even if i've never been into the whole metagame thing and whether pokemon are viable or not. i hope for the next lot of games they can keep the strong and complex mechanics base they've built but bring back the feelings of exploration and discovery of the old games instead of the cutscenes and corridors.

I mean, I know immersion is relative to the game in question but I wouldn't exactly consider Pokemon a particularly immersive series. There's way too much that's out of the player's control. That isn't to say the games aren't fun and enjoyable but even in the series' most immersive moments, which I'd consider exploring in Gens 1 and 2, I was never more immersed than any other game. It's a mechanically-driven series and it always has been.

the first is pretty obvious, and that's how well the game suspends your disbelief and make you feel a part of the world
the second is how wholly the game holds your attention. some people don't need to feel like the game is real to be immersed, but want features and gameplay that occupies their mind
I think pokemon is much better at the second one, and that that is a more universal appeal

Pretty sure the word for this is "engagement", not "immersion". They're pretty distinct. A game like Papers, Please is immersive but not engaging, while a game like Super Monkey Ball is engaging but not immersive. And I'd agree, Pokemon is definitely more engaging than immersive.

What does that even mean? If anything it's less immersive because you're controlling the Pokemon by proxy. You play as the trainer outside of battle but in battle for all intents and purposes you're playing as the Pokemon, the only thing that draws the line is flavor text that implies you're issuing commands and using items rather than the Pokemon choosing what to do and using items itself. This is most obvious in wild Pokemon battles that operate IDENTICALLY to trainer battles, aside from the ability to capture Pokemon and the ability for the wild Pokemon to use non-held items. If they wanted it to be more immersive then wild Pokemon battles would always work like the Safari Zone, there's zero reason for every wild encounter to play out like a trainer battle.

That's kind of the point. You don't control the Pokemon, you tell it what to do.
If you have Pikachu out, and you switch to Gengar, do you stop playing as Pikachu and start playing as Gengar?
Or do you play as the trainer the whole time, just giving orders?

I understand that but for gameplay purposes you ARE controlling the Pokemon. There's so little trainer/Pokemon interaction in-battle that I'm not sure why they even bother. Oddly enough gimmicks like Mega Evolution and Z-Moves actually serve to enhance player immersion on account of the trainer actually participating in battle aside from issuing commands and using items. Pokken also does this via an implied, more comprehensive form of Pokemon control via the headset the trainers wear.

I will say, when I play Pokemon I don't think of myself as the Pokemon. I don't even really think of myself as the PC.
Although, since the PC is a mime, I guess that just makes it easier to self-insert.
I always think of it as; I am training my Pokemon, I am battling these trainers, and so on.
