sorry /vp/ very new here.. haven't played a pokemon game since red/blue but getting the itch.

what do i start with? i looked online and there are so many fucking choices its making my head spin. i just want some nostalgia of old.

HeartGold is my favorite, and you can go through Kanto again in it as well, so that oughta appeal to you. Plus the Battle Frontier and tons of legendaries.
I'd say play HeartGold and then play White and White 2 is you enjoyed yourself.

That's actually Red in the games. Completely different character, Ash isn't cannon in game at all.
As for what happened to Red, he's on Mt Silver, he's the very last trainer you fight in HeartGold besides randoms in the Battle Frontier.

Fair enough, Crystal was fantastic in it's own right, I'm just a huge HGSSfag.

Yeah I couldn't get into BW1 until I finished BW2, where I got interested in the story from. I think BW2 is a great starting point with all the content it has.

Personally I really liked the character progression from BW1 to BW2, but I feel ya.
As for content, you ain't lying. Plat/HGSS/BW2 are the undisputed KINGS of postgame content.
They don't put that kinda effort in anymore. You can't even fucking rechallenge gym leaders.

After you get all 16 badges, go to the Gamefreak building/Celadon Mansion in, you guessed it, Celadon City in Kanto.
A dude in there will give you a key item that'll switch the music over to the good old OG soundtrack.
It's great.
