Not big on Pokemon and never posted on here despite having been on this site long before the split from /v/, so forgive me if this kind of thread isn't accepted or something.

I have my old Ruby cart from when I was a kid and it turns out I still have a shiny tentacruel I caught. How would one go about getting it from GBA to 3DS? I've got Omega Sapphire

You would need a gen 4 and gen 5 game to get it all the way up to your gen 6 game.

You also need a GBA, DS, and a 3DS.
gba - > ds -> 3ds

There are lots of guides on the internet, just as long as your game is diamond or newer you are good.

I don't have my DS anymore, fuck.
How long does the memory battery for GBA carts usually last? I know GB carts tend to die, are GBA the same? I'm mostly worried if I ever lose the save and the shiny, sounds silly but I have special memories of even catching it period.

If you get a link cable and trade it to firered or leafgreen, the battery wont die and lose your save and you can have it on there.

I'm going by memory here, so bare with me.

To get Gen 3 to Gen 4, you need a regular DS so you can put the cart into the bottom of the DS, then Diamond/Pearl/Platinum into the top part.

Then you need to get far enough into D/P/Plat to access the Pal Park, which allows transfer of Pokemon from Gen 3 to Gen 4.

Then, and this is where I am hazy, but I think you need two DS. One needs to be loaded with D/P/Plat, then the other needs to be loaded with a Gen 5 game (BW, BW2). You need to progress to late/post game in BW/BW2 to access the Transfer Lab or something like that, which unlocks transfer from Gen 4. THEN, you need to put the tentacruel in a box, switch to download play, activate the transfer lab in Gen 5 on the other DS, and it should transfer the pokemon.

Next, to get from Gen 5 to Gen 6, you need Poke Transporter from the Nintendo App store on your 3DS that has Alpha Sapphire. You also need Pokemon Bank, which costs five dollars a year.

Using Poke Transporter, you can transfer your Gen 5 pokemon to Gen 6 games, and from there you are done.

I'm not sure but i've had my same cart since release date, racked up more than a couple hundred hours and it still works (GBA still works too amazingly). I know that's not a great indicator across the board but they last a while.
