If Pokemon are intelligent enough to understand human speech and can even hold jobs how come they don't ever form any kind of society? Are Pokemon even equal to humans, what is the relationship between them?

Pokémon can do certain jobs because we teach them how to do it, not because they are naturally workers. I mean, they have superpowers, but they have to be teached to use them in a specific way. The wild pokémon have some sort of society that are similar to our animals, some of them doesn't neither need to do that because they can work with humans, so what's the point?

This is all covered in various forms of lore that Google can find in two minutes. Pokémon and Humans used to be the same species, which is an analogy for Mankind and Apes occupying the same planet in modern society. Pokémon have formed societies, that just haven't 'flourished' for lack of a better word. Clefairy and Pikachu (as groups) have been known to have small societies comparable to Apes in Planet of the Apes (the more recent film franchise), and fuck the guy that said Maybe if you played Mystery Dungeon you'd find out because that would have been about as useful as me hyperlinking Google.com to you.

If they did that, then there wouldn't be catching, battling, training, breeding, etc. There'd be no Pokemon [games], pretty much, because the whole idea relies heavily on the complete opposite of what you're suggesting. Also, kids' franchise.

They're misportrayed in the anime due to the bad writing we all know. They aren't that intelligent, some of them are, yeah, you know the likes of Alakazam etc. But they're more or less the Pokemon world's version of animals and act on instinct.

A Sinnoh folk tale you can find in Gen 4 says that long ago, "there existed no differences to distinguish" humans and Pokemon. This suggests humans and Pokemon were once the same species. Of course, that's assuming the folk tale is true, which it might not be.

I’ve wondered about this. Do your Pokémon need vaccinations when you transfer from different regions? How much damage do children do to the ecosystem by running a Pokémon mill? Fossil Pokémon being reintroduced after several million years could do severe damage.

I feel like you wouldn't be able to run a pokemon mill in universe. You would be able to adopt away the first few "breedjects" but afterwards you would be unable to send them to an adoption agency and be arrested for releasing them into the wild.

Pokerus isn't the only disease in-universe. It's just the only one we ever encounter in the games. This is proven in Gen 5, when it's stated that Alder once trained a Pokemon that ended up dying from an illness, which clearly must have been something other than Pokerus.
