because most people's primary experience with the fight is playing gold/silver at age 9 and following up the generation where bug types were pure trash. What People mean by "this fight was hard" is "this fight fucks you up if you're not prepared for this exact fight".

yes because all first time players are going to know that headbutt exists, that heracross exists, which trees to headbutt, that it has a low catch rate, and that it's a good pokemon to begin with. i'm sure all first time players are well aware of all of these factors.

Not him, but Feraligatr is still incredibly good at smashing through GS. It has a distinct advantage in that it evolves earlier and can grab Ice Punch/a strong move (Surf) earlier without needing to grind coins in Crystal vs Cyndaquil. And then once you don’t use it anymore it turns into one of the best HM slaves. Really, the only disadvantage it has is that there are Water-types out the ass in GSC whereas finding a good Grass/Fire-type is more difficult. Magmar is an option only in GS, so if you play Crystal you’re kind of locked out.

This. I underestimated and misclicked a lot in hala's e4 fight and his crawbominable swept through me leaving only mudsdale against the rest of his team, with only sitrus berries for healing and somehow I managed to turn that fight around only with mudsdale. Mudsdale carries so fucking hard

Even way before then, it makes the whole game even more of a joke than it already is. NPCs don't know to stop using physical moves on it so Stamina keeps getting procced, and then you're primed to just Bulldoze/Horespower/Double Kick everything to death.

Feraligatr, Typhlosion very early and lategame (though it flags midgame), Golem

Gen 3
Swampert, no contest, nothing else comes close, but Electric types will carry you through much of the water and flying filled lategame

Gen 4
Infernape, Staraptor, Bronzong (it ain't efficient, but it tanks so much shit), Heracross for HGSS

Gen 5
Excadrill, Stoutland in the first half

Gen 6
Mega Lucario, Mega Charizard (either), Azumarill (in both XY and ORAS)

Gen 7
Mudsdale, A-Muk, heard good things about Furfrou and Hawlucha in USUM as well

I used a Hawlucha when playing through Ultra Sun. I can confirm that it's a lot of fun. A-Dugtrio is great for SM, its STAB hits most of the game pretty hard, and it's fast.
