>>35287693Let's find out!
Mew vs Mew. Both blank sets with Hardy natures.
0 Atk Mew Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 73-86 (21.4 - 25.2%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO
So a Pokemon with 100 Base Attack takes 5 hits to KO a Pokemon with 100 Base Defense with a neutral move. What does the Attack stat have to be to get a 2HKO? The answer is 220:
0 Atk (220 Base) Mew Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 145-171 (42.5 - 50.1%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO
So the Attack stat needs to be 2.2x higher than the Defense stat in order to pose an immediate threat with a neutral, non-STAB move.
STAB has a huge effect though:
0 Atk (140 Base, Ground-type) Mew Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 144-171 (42.2 - 50.1%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO
As does SE:
0 SpA Mew Moongeist Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew: 146-172 (42.8 - 50.4%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO
Together they make a huge difference:
0 SpA (Base 61, Ghost-type) Mew Moongeist Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew: 146-174 (42.8 - 51%) -- 2.7% chance to 2HKO
These numbers are obviously only relevant for Base 100s, but gives you an idea of the scale of offense vs defense. Neutral, non-STAB hits aren't shit against Base 100 Defenses, and even STAB hits require a pretty high Base 140 just to 2HKO 0.4% of the time.
So to summarise, one point in Defense is worth a lot more to a defensive Pokemon than one point in Attack makes to an offensive Pokemon.
