Yeah, it sucks that Lillie is the one who got to fight all of those Totem pokemon, sneak into the Team Skull base, sneak into Aether Foundation to rescue Lillie, fight those Kahunas, go to to Ultra Space, save the world, go to the Pokemon League, etc. If only the player got to do all those things, this game would have been so much better.

That really only applies to Gen V. In 3 you were just the strongest trainer around when Aqua/Magma did their bullshit and the Champion wanted you to fight it because he thought you had the potential to be better than him, and thought fighting a legendary would prove it. Gen IV and VI are really just the same as Gen I and II but the legendaries are directly involved in the plot those times. In Platinum you were just unlucky enough to be dragged into the Distortion World, Cynthia would have fought Cyrus herself.
