I am currently in the middle of playing Platinum (Set, Exp Share on a random route Mon I try to evolve, no grinding. Basically my definition of hard mode). So far it is comfortably hard. Imo USUM was harder by a long shot.

The only possible way Sinnoh could be considered difficult is due to it's absolutely dogshit Pokemon distribution and the fact that you need to give up at least 2 team slots to HM slaves, or suffer giving your starter Rock Smash and your required Staraptor Defog.

I always thought the only reason it'd be considered difficult is because the exp given to you in that game is relatively paltry if you don't knock out every wild mon you come across.

Using HMs on your party members is not that bad. It's not like they remain unusable, and there's always the move deletor when you don't need them anymore.

You don't need Defog. That route is quite annoying thanks to the evasion, but it's not impossible.
