There are plenty of patterns which haven't been changed in 20 years, yes. Including the 3-years-for-a-new-gen pattern, the at-least-3-movies-per-gen pattern, the at-least-120-anime-episodes-per-gen pattern.

Can you name an important series-wide pattern that lasted a long time and suddenly changed?

The reason things like mythical reveals and generation lengths follow a pattern is because the entire series has many areas that need to tie together. We aren't going to have Zeroara shilled for the movie and USUM in such a short period of time, if we we having a new gen this year then they would have kicked this off earlier in the year.

They can change them, but there's no reason to do that now. If anything, given the shift from handheld to home console is such a leap, there is much less reason for them to change the pattern at this point in time. The only way I can see that being true is if Pokemon Switch is a remake, reboot or otherwise deviates from being a new generation altogether. Remember that the only game to be announced as late as April was B/W, a game which was a reboot and was developed for the DS - a console which the Gen prior had already christened.

Masuda said they announced SM too early and apologised for the wait between announcement and revealing information about the games. I'd bet anything, he's put his foot down and won't announce until they're at least ready to drop a trailer and info about it all too this time out.

I think that's a poor example of a pattern because its incidence rate lies mainly in coincidental number patterns. But even if it were intentional, it doesn't negate the other patterns above. There could absolutely be a new Eeveelution in Gen 8, but that doesn't conflict with the other patterns.

Actually he is right. Game content patterns are less important than franchise-wide patterns. The franchise moves entirely as a unit, Masuda has already confirmed this before. Changes to gameplay (Or even changes to the content of the anime, if you want to go that far) don't impact the greater franchise.

Why does that make any difference? I've already told people this about 30 times before on this board, but you're all overstating the importance of Eevee in this movie. I think you're just conflating the fact that Project Eevee exists with some sort of overblown importance of Eevee in the movie. Make no mistake, the lead Pokemon in the movie is Lugia, not Eevee, not Chansey, not any of the Pokemon belonging to the characters whose stories feature in the plot.

Because that pattern is grasping at straws, honestly. You could say the same about a lot of Pokemon that get cross-gen evolutions or alternate versions in the following gen. The movies aren't necessarily there to just promote the game, that's not how the franchise moves.

Is there any actual proof of this? Can you provide a source? S/M was announced in February and X/Y was announced in January, so I don't see how this would be 'too early'.

We already know Ohmori had plans to release the game on the 20th Anniversary as soon as they'd started the S/M project.
