Keep in mind that, at least in the US, a lot of food service workers rely on tips to make ends meet. Restaurants don't pay their servers minimum wage - they pay them some pitiful hourly amount and expect the tips to make up for it. So those people are at the mercy of their customers. It's unfair to both the employees and the customers, and it's another example of why the US is such a shit country.
But tipping in XY was dumb, yea.
