Doesn't mean a thing. US/UM were follow ups on the same system, not a new Gen on a new system.

Ruby and Sapphire is all the evidence you need that even a July or august announcement isn't entirely out of the question (after E3 I wouldn't expect it as it's highly unlikely, but as late as an August 3rd reveal isn't impossible as per proper patternfagging).

USUM was also reused assets and not much to show off, hence why it had a short promotional period.

What DOES probably indicate something is the fact that the release of the movies featuring the last mythical Pokemon in a generation line up with the release of a new Gen. This happened with Gen 6 and 7. The situation isn't complete analogous but it's an interesting pattern nonetheless.

Adding onto that, the dev cycle for the last 12 years has been 3 games/3 years, gap year. We've had 2 games in 2 and people think there'll be a gap year this year, of all years in a 4 year cycle.
