Infernape breaks the game early on. Empoleon's speed is more easily exploited and sometimes that added steel type is a hinderance, but it has a good movepool and supplants your need to open a spot for a surfer. Torterra is strong with a good base move pool but is the only one of the three to experience a lull in usefulness. Two big snow routes, Ice gym, and the final trek up Mt. Coronet through team Galactic make for a tough time for it. It bounces back but the point still stands.
Magmortar is the only new Fire type you can obtain. You might just want to stick with Houndoom if you don't pick Chimchar. Gastrodon and Floaztel are both good Water options. If you don't want to be basic and get Staraptor, you can always go with Honchkrow or Togekiss. Better yet, be an absolute madman and go with Chatot.
