>>35331660I dunno exactly at what point you're "getting into it" so I'll just go in order.
>First, learn about the various functions through which pokemon are "created." Things like EVs, IVs, egg moves, natures, etc>Second, decide which tier of the smogon meta (because let's face it what else is there other than vgc) you'd like to play in. If you'd prefer playing in a tier that isn't exactly hospitable for pokemon you'd really rather use, come to terms with the fact that your "bromons" simply won't be enough in your tier and let go of any expectations if you use them anyway.>Third, learn about the different roles that pokemon can have and how these roles compliment each other on a team and how they do against pokemon of the other roles. Alongside this, get a feel for what stats and sorts of moves are a reliable standard for the various roles.>Fourth, based on your knowledge of pokemons' roles, stats, specific moves (like coverage moves, for example) and (presumably) type matchups, look at the most frequently used pokemon in your tier of the meta. Smogon's damage calculator can be a great utility for doing this. It should be noted, however, that an entire team shouldn't be constructed to be anti-meta, as such teams tend to fall short when paired against less conventional, yet similar-to-meta picks. Instead, figure out which coverage moves or abilities and such to use, or even have one "utility" pokemon to hard-counter a particularly commom annoyance. Sometimes one can still do well with an entirely meta-friendly team, though.>Fifth, proceed playing the game with your current sense for the game/your meta and it will be refined and made more accurate over time, allowing you to predict events and turn the tide of matchesThat's about it, really. Personally, I got into it just by outright starting by using tryhard meta mons and I kinda learned along the way. Good luck.
