They were so cheap that they didn't even bother introducing better rival for Ash to beat. Everytime they needed Ash to beat someone outside gym leader, they just brought Shota. Its like they can't think of anybody better for Ash to beat except Shota. Do you know how frustrating to think that Ash accomplishment on Kalos league was to beat Shota again?
Nothing forced Yajima or writer to favour Alain, Yajima could have ended the league with nether Ash or Alain winning it which would been better than handing everything to Alain free despite being completely underserving of them.
XY was completely shit series, it was more like a fan fiction written by a little Kid who's self inserted favourite character would always win and always gets everything for free.
