Gens only exist in the forums and the likes. However, according to FagJungle here, he wants a new term, coined by him of course.

Whatever game will come out for the switch, as long as it is within the 'mainline' Pokemon games, WILL be Gen 8. Regardless of whether it is a remake or new region.

I think the best part of a reimagined Kanto would be the amount of work they could put into the game and it's features/world. Frankly they've been running out of ideas in terms of designs and this could also give them a bit of a break instead of giving us more Digimon.

But GSC can't even Battle with RBY, so your point is irrelevant. Though he should have wrote "Trade AND Battle"
This is the main point. Games of a new generation have never NOT been compatible in terms of battling and trading(They aren't al FULLY compatible, but they are still compatible to some extent in terms of battling and trading)

I don't think anyone actually calls BW a reboot. However, Game Freak did say they considered making it a reboot, they just scrapped the idea and turned it into "none of the old Pokémon appear during the main game".
Maybe some people are confused about it though.

Well I'd much rather have a new pokemon game that uses all new pokemon during the main game. My loved a lot of the pokemon gen 7 gave us, but holy fuck the count of just regular pokemon was so low, even just adding some evolutions to the shorter lines or even the mons that didn't evolve at all would have been good. Also Alola forms were great, but fuck why did it have to be all Kanto stuff

Game Freak barely uses the term "generation" officially, so what they actually define a new generation as is, like most things, unclear. This is why we're so reliant on patterns. Every generation has introduced new Pokemon/regions/, so it's fair to assume that this is what truly divides generations, but all it would take for this to be proven wrong is a game to release with no new Pokemon. There's no set in stone rules from the developers so it's really just a bunch of patterns waiting to be continued or broken. Officially there's nothing stopping them from releasing a new remake with no new Pokemon and it being Generation 8.

I agree with everything but I would like to point out that for it to be considered gen 8 one of those 2 things would have to happen (we can't have both, they're highly incompatible)
1. TPC/Game Freak/Nintendo says so, which makes generations an official classification that fans have nothing to do with anymore (like they did with the term "shiny")
2. Most popular fan sites agree that it is gen 8, and so that's the definition fans get used to

Most series don't have "generations", and the few that do have different definitions for it. My Little Pony for example uses generations to refer to reboots. They're currently in the fourth generation and generation 5 is planned for 2020. I know Transformers also has generations, and I'm pretty sure they're different from both Pokémon and MLP.

I doubt we'll ever get a remake that could be considered gen 8 desu. The first versions with a new region and a new set of Pokemon are always the ones that sell the most so there's an incentive for Gamefreak to shit those out first.

I also don't see a reason for them to ever release a new region without everything else associated with a new generation like a new set Pokemon and mechanics. Seems pretty retarded considering all of those are a major selling point. I could easily be proven wrong though.

Compatibility was never the issue, it was being different from the current gen. Remakes are an established gen, so they don't count, and third versions don't count since they're an expansion of the originals, they still count as the same gen.

Except you wouldn't, because we've already established that there's no official definition for a Generation. There's no rules put out by Game Freak saying what does and doesn't count as a new Generation. It could be something as innocuous as a change in visual style. If it means whatever they want it to mean then there's no point in trying to pin it down.
