Haven't played pokemon since Gen 2 as a kid. Recently got a ds for MH and I want another slightly more chill game. Which one should I get though? There's so god damn many. Was thinking maybe getting Ultra sun or moon but ORAS seems to have been really popular and I'm not averse to older games. Here's a rath plate for your troubles.

I needed a ruby but thanks anyway. Opinions here are pretty polarized but I'll just say I had fun with BW, BW2, and XY. Others will probably shit on me but I found those games very comfy

Sun and Moon are the most recent games. If you want to go that route pick up Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon Instead.
You could try Black/Black 2. Although the starters aren't the best, and some of the designs are questionable, they're really good Pokemon games I think you'll enjoy.
Since gen 2 was the last game you played you could try HG/SS, which is a remake of Gold and Silver. I've never played it before, but it has critical acclaim in the community.

If you really want to play a 3DS game, get ORAS. It’s saved by virtue of being a remake of very good games.
XY aren’t bad but are kinda meh, aesthetic is comfy though.
IMO SM/USUM has far too much hand holding and such. In a vacuum, they’re ok, but playing literally any other Pokémon game afterwards reveals how mediocre they really are.

Assuming you meant 3DS, I'd say go for USUM if you want to experience something completely different and are comfortable with that. It changes the old gym formula pretty wildly and there's so much more Pokemon it may be a bit overwhelming.

If you wanna ease yourself into it, go with HGSS, the best games in the franchise and remakes of the last games you played. Great games.

If you're shooting for the middle of those two, maybe Platinum or BW2 is something you might be interested in. Pretty good games that don't change the formula too much.

BW/BW2 are very close seconds in my defense, it's just the HGSS games are damn near perfect.

It basically fixed none of the core problems with GSC while giving it updated mechanics.

Honestly, I'd say it's tied with GSC, because what it gained in updated mechanics and the small iprovements it DID bring, it lost in aesthetic and music.

I disagree as far as the aesthetics and music, I liked that. Level curve is still bad and Kanto is still kinda boring, but the Pokemon selection wasn't too bad as far as I remember.
